The Devastating Consequences of Unhealthy Worrying
Are you tired of being held captive by anxiety and fear? Unhealthy worrying can have a crippling effect on our lives, rendering us ineffective and unable to cope with life’s challenges. This toxic habit can even lead to depression. We worry about a multitude of things, from our health and finances to our families and the unknown dangers that lurk around every corner.
The Definition of Worry
According to the Longman Dictionary, worry is an uncomfortable feeling in the mind, caused by a mixture of fear and uncertainty. Unfortunately, this feeling can have a profound impact on our physical and mental well-being. Experts agree that worry can take a heavy toll on our overall health.
The Physical and Mental Toll of Worry
Dr. Charles Mayo once said, “Worry affects the circulation and the whole nervous system. I’ve never known a man who died from overwork, but I’ve known many who have died from doubt.” These words of wisdom highlight the devastating consequences of unchecked worry.
Finding Peace in the Midst of Anxiety
So, what are you worrying about today? Is it the uncertainty of tomorrow or the weight of your current circumstances? The Lord Jesus offers us a powerful antidote to anxiety in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” This simple yet profound truth encourages us to take each day as it comes, trusting in God’s sovereignty and provision.
The Futility of Worrying About Tomorrow
There is no point in worrying about tomorrow, because no one is assured of a tomorrow. God holds the times and seasons in His hand, and Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” This verse highlights the importance of committing each day and our future plans into God’s hands, receiving His strength for our anxieties.
Living in the Present
Not only can’t we control tomorrow, but we do not know what may happen today. Some of us may be facing severe crisis situations, and the thought of a new day can be daunting. However, we can find comfort in the fact that God is always in control. He is the God of the present, and He identifies Himself in the scriptures in the present tense as “I am.”
Breaking Free from Regret and Anxiety
Sadly, many people are either living with regret over the past or with anxiety over the future. However, Paul encourages us to forget what is behind and press on towards the future, trusting in God’s grace every day (Philippians 3:13 and 4:6). By placing our today in God’s hands, we can experience His providence, protection, and provision.
Trusting in God’s Sovereignty
In a world filled with uncertainty, we can find peace and comfort in God’s sovereignty. By trusting in His power and provision, we can break free from the shackles of worry and anxiety, living a life that is marked by faith, hope, and confidence.
