The Protective Power of Salvation
As a child, I often wondered why the “armor of God” was designed to cover specific parts of the body. Some pieces made sense, like the “breastplate of righteousness” guarding our heart, symbolizing the protection of our soul. The “shield of faith” was also easy to understand, deflecting the enemy’s attacks and safeguarding our entire being. But what about the “helmet of salvation”? Why was it necessary?
A Personal Encounter
I gained insight into this question when a friend struggled with doubts about their salvation. Previously, they had lived a life of purpose and peace, serving joyfully in their church and walking in God’s ways. However, they began to believe that God judged them harshly, withholding forgiveness for their sins. Despite my efforts to share scriptures about God’s unwavering love and forgiveness, they felt condemned. “I just don’t feel God’s peace or joy,” they would say. This experience showed me that knowing and feeling salvation are two different things.
The Assurance of Salvation
John’s words in the Bible brought clarity to this issue: “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” My friend certainly believed, yet they struggled to feel secure in their salvation. John continues, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” The “helmet of salvation” protects our minds, ensuring that we know we have eternal life.
A Prayer of Assurance
Do you believe Jesus is God’s gift to the world for salvation? You can have confidence in your salvation by praying a simple prayer: “God, I believe Jesus is the Christ, the spiritual Savior of the world and me personally. Thank you for the knowledge that in believing in him I may know my salvation.” Amen.
A Step Towards Redemption
If you’ve never asked God to forgive your sins, but want to make it personal, take a moment to pray the prayer above. Expand on it as you feel led. God desires genuine repentance and wants to transform your life.
Embracing the Gift of Salvation
Remember, knowing and feeling salvation are not the same. The “helmet of salvation” protects our minds, ensuring that we know we have eternal life. By believing in Jesus, we can have confidence in our salvation and live a life of purpose and peace.
