Overcoming Fear and Anxiety: A Lesson from Gideon’s Story
A Life of Oppression
Imagine living in a constant state of fear, where every day is a struggle to survive. This was the reality for the people of Israel, who were being oppressed by the Midianites as a result of their rebellion against God. The situation was so dire that they had to hide their food from the enemy, just to avoid being plundered.
Gideon’s Low Point
One person who understood the weight of this oppression was Gideon. He was a man who lived in a state of perpetual anxiety, constantly looking over his shoulder, wondering when the next attack would come. So much so, that he was forced to thresh grain in a wine press, just to keep it safe from prying eyes. It was at this lowest of points that the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, with a seemingly impossible task: to deliver Israel from the Midianites.
The Struggle with Self-Doubt
Gideon’s initial reaction was one of shock and fear. He didn’t see himself as a great warrior, and felt totally inadequate for the task. His focus was on his own weaknesses, rather than on the power of God. He looked at the situation through human eyes, and concluded that the Lord had abandoned Israel. But God’s response was reassuring: “I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man” (Judges 6:16).
A Shift in Focus
Like Gideon, we too often focus on our own limitations, rather than on the promises of God. We worry about our inability, rather than trusting in His ability. But what if we were to shift our focus? What if we were to remember God’s past faithfulness, and trust in His future promises? Would our anxiety not be replaced by His peace?
The Key to Overcoming Anxiety
Persevering through anxiety is not easy, but it is possible when we know God intimately, believe His Word, and trust Him explicitly. It requires a deep understanding of His character, and a willingness to surrender our fears to Him. As we do, we’ll discover that our anxiety is no match for His peace.
Trusting in God’s Promises
So the next time fear and anxiety creep in, remember Gideon’s story. Remember that God is always with us, even in the darkest of times. Trust in His promises, and believe that He will see us through. For when we do, we’ll find that our anxiety is outweighed by His peace.
