Embracing Discomfort for Deeper Relationships

Prioritizing Relationships Over Personal Comfort

A recent overnight visit with a longtime friend forced me to confront the harsh realities of their troubled life. Despite our divergent paths, we’ve managed to stay in touch. However, the cluttered and smoke-filled environment of their home made me feel uneasy.

A Night to Remember

As we reminisced about our shared past, I couldn’t help but notice the disarray of their bedroom. Piles of boxes and clothes surrounded a broken-legged bed, complete with a stained mattress and a pillow without a case. I was torn between my desire for comfort and my commitment to our friendship. In that moment, I chose to prioritize our relationship over my personal comfort.

The Value of Discomfort

That night was far from restful, with the tilted bed landing me on the floor in the middle of the night. Yet, I knew I had made the right decision. Comfort is a valuable commodity, but it shouldn’t be the sole determining factor in our decisions. Jesus, for instance, didn’t let comfort dictate his actions.

A Higher Priority

Today’s verse highlights Jesus’ willingness to step out of his comfort zone to fulfill his Father’s will. He left the comforts of heaven to walk among us, facing mockery, beatings, and ultimately, death on the cross. His love for God and humanity drove him to make the ultimate sacrifice, despite the discomfort it entailed.

Surrendering Comfort

As I reflect on Jesus’ example, I’m reminded of the importance of surrendering my own desire for comfort. I pray that God’s plan and purpose may be reflected in my life, even if it means embracing discomfort. Jesus, thank you for your obedience and love, which have given me the gift of forgiveness and a relationship with God. Amen.

Reflection and Prayer

Father, I surrender my desire for comfort. May the beauty of your plan and purpose be reflected in and through my life. Jesus, thank you; your love and obedience have given me the gift of forgiveness and a relationship with God. Amen.
