The Heart of Discipleship: Transferring Truth Through Relationship
As a pastor, I’ve had the privilege of discipling two young men who recently came to faith in Christ. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that discipleship involves more than just teaching – it’s about transferring truth through relationship.
A Simple yet Powerful Definition
Discipleship is not a complex concept. At its core, it’s about sharing God’s Word with others in a way that’s both personal and practical. When I meet with these two men on Wednesday nights, I’m not just imparting knowledge – I’m sharing my life with them. I love them, and they know it. In return, they’re learning to love and apply God’s Word in their own lives.
The Problem: A Lack of Intentional Discipleship
Most believers have never been intentionally discipled, and as a result, they don’t know how to disciple others. This is a problem that needs to be addressed. We need to understand that discipleship is not just about reading books or attending seminars – it’s about sharing our lives with others.
A Practical Approach
So, what does this look like in practice? For me, it means meeting with these two men on a regular basis to read and discuss God’s Word. We’re not just studying scripture – we’re applying it to our lives. We’re learning to rejoice in God’s goodness, to trust in His sovereignty, and to live out our faith in practical ways.
A Challenge to You
If you’re a believer, I encourage you to find someone you can disciple. It doesn’t have to be complicated – just start by sharing your life with someone. Read God’s Word together, pray together, and encourage one another. Remember, discipleship is not just about transferring knowledge – it’s about transferring truth through relationship.
A Guiding Principle
As Bill Clem once said, “Discipleship is truth transferred through relationship.” This simple principle has guided my approach to discipleship, and I hope it will guide yours as well. Remember, it’s not about rules or regulations – it’s about trusting Jesus and living out His gospel in our daily lives.
