The Power of Compassion: A Lesson from Jesus
As Jesus stepped out of the boat, he was met with a sea of faces, each one filled with need and desperation. Despite having just received the devastating news of his cousin John the Baptist’s beheading, Jesus’ heart went out to the crowd. He saw their suffering, their hunger, and their pain, and he was moved to act.
A Heart of Compassion
Compassion is more than just feeling sorry for someone; it’s a deep desire to help those who are struggling. Jesus embodied this definition, putting the needs of others before his own. Even in his time of grief, he didn’t turn the crowd away. Instead, he laid aside his own needs and focused on healing the sick and feeding the hungry.
The Importance of Solitude
But Jesus didn’t stop there. After ministering to the crowd, he withdrew to a quiet place to pray. This time of solitude was crucial, as it allowed him to recharge and refocus on his mission. By staying connected to his source, Jesus ensured that he would continue to do the will of the Father.
A Call to Serve
God is calling us to serve others with the same heart of compassion that Jesus demonstrated. However, our own selfish desires and insecurities often get in the way. We become so focused on our own needs that we miss opportunities to make a difference in the lives of those around us.
Recognizing Our Source
The key to helping others is recognizing that God is our source. When we come to him with humility, admitting our insufficiency, he takes what we have and multiplies it. This allows us to make a greater impact in the world around us.
A Prayer for Compassion
Lord, I come to you today asking that you fill me with a heart of compassion and love for others. May I see the needs of those around me and be moved to act. May I lay aside my own desires and focus on serving others. I desire to love as Jesus loves, and to please you in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
