When Life Feels Like Drowning
Have you ever felt like you’re suffocating under the weight of your circumstances? Like the waves of adversity are crashing down on you, threatening to consume you whole? You’re not alone. Even David, the writer of Psalm 69, knew the feeling all too well.
A Cry for Help
David’s psalm begins with a desperate cry for rescue: “Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.” (Psalm 69:1-3) He’s exhausted from crying out for help, his throat parched, and his eyes dim from waiting for God’s response. It’s a feeling of being completely overwhelmed, hated, and unjustly accused.
The Power of Worship
But here’s the surprising twist: despite his dire circumstances, David chooses to praise God. “I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.” This isn’t a natural response, but it’s a vital one. David understands that true worship requires a long-term perspective, one that looks beyond the immediate crisis.
Finding Trust in the Storm
It’s easy to get caught up in the urgency of our problems, to feel like we’re drowning in uncertainty and negativity. But David shows us that even in the darkest moments, we can find a way to trust and wait on the Lord. By doing so, we’re not ignoring our problems; we’re simply choosing to focus on God’s goodness and love.
A Prayer for the Overwhelmed
So, what can we do when life feels like it’s spiraling out of control? We can pray the words of Psalm 69:3: “But as for me, my prayer is to Thee, O Lord, at an acceptable time; O God, in the greatness of Thy loving kindness, answer me with Thy saving truth.” May these words bring us comfort and peace in the midst of our struggles.
