Facing Mortality with Unwavering Confidence
A recent brush with a life-threatening medical condition forced me to confront my own mortality. As I lay in the hospital, surrounded by a tangled web of wires, I was reminded of the preciousness of life. In that moment, I realized that hope is not just a fleeting wish, but a steadfast anchor that holds fast in the face of uncertainty.
The Biblical Definition of Hope
Unlike the common understanding of hope as a vague desire for something to happen, the Bible defines it as “confident expectation.” This unwavering assurance is rooted in the conviction that God is sovereign and trustworthy. Without this hope, life loses its purpose and direction.
The Righteous Shall Be Helped
For those who trust in God, hope brings a sense of security and peace. They are confident in His protection and help, and are free from fear and anxiety. This hope is not based on circumstances, but on the character of God. As the psalmist wrote, “The righteous shall be helped, and they shall not be confounded, put to shame, or disappointed” (Psalm 37:39).
My Ultimate Hope
While I prayed for recovery and the opportunity to continue living life to the fullest, my ultimate hope was not in my physical healing, but in my eternal salvation. Even in the darkest moments, I knew that my hope was secure in Jesus Christ. As the hymn writer Edward Mote so eloquently put it, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ, my righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”
A Hope That Springs Eternal
In the face of uncertainty, my hope remains unshaken. I know that one day, I will see the face of Jesus, and all will be well. This hope is not just a distant dream, but a present reality that shapes my daily life. As I look to the future, I am filled with anticipation and joy, knowing that my hope is built on the rock-solid foundation of Jesus Christ.
