Finding Peace in a Broken World
As believers, we’re often reminded that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches (John 15:5-8). This powerful metaphor illustrates the intimate connection we have with our Lord. But despite this promise, many Christians struggle to experience the peace that flows from this union.
The False Pursuit of Perfect Conditions
One common misconception is that peace is a result of perfect circumstances. We think that if we can just get our lives in order, we’ll finally experience serenity. But the truth is, this world is broken, and we’ll never achieve an ideal existence on this earth. No matter how hard we try, our circumstances will always be imperfect.
The Intimacy of God’s Presence
Others believe that peace must be requested from a distant God, rather than recognizing the intimate union we have with Him. But Jesus lives within us, and His presence is the source of our tranquility. As the Living Bible paraphrases, “Just as you trusted Christ to save you, trust him, too, for each day’s problems; live in vital union with him. Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him” (Colossians 2:6-7).
The Power of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit, who resides within every follower of Jesus, is the key to experiencing peace in the midst of chaos. This internal wellspring of calm is available to us immediately, not dependent on external circumstances. By abiding in Christ and allowing His words to abide in us, we can ask whatever we wish, and it will be done for us (John 15:7).
Rooted in Christ
No outside situation can tamper with our connection to Jesus. We partake of His abundant life through the Holy Spirit, and this union is what brings us peace. By trusting in Christ and living in vital union with Him, we can experience the tranquility that He offers.
A Life of Fruitfulness
As we abide in Christ, we’ll bear much fruit, and this will glorify our Father in heaven (John 15:8). Our lives will become a testament to the power of Jesus, and we’ll prove to be His disciples. So let’s focus on cultivating a deeper relationship with our Lord, and allow His peace to flow through us like sap from a vine to its branches.
