Unlocking Your Spiritual Gifts

Understanding Spiritual Gifts

As Christians, we are given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit to enable us to serve others and bring glory to God. But what are these gifts, and how do they work?

What are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are capacities or abilities imparted to Christians by the Holy Spirit to exceed the limitations of their finite humanity. They are a manifestation of the Spirit, designed to draw attention to God’s presence and power. According to Paul, spiritual gifts are a way for the Holy Spirit to be displayed in concrete and tangible ways (1 Cor. 12:7).

Where are Spiritual Gifts Mentioned in the Bible?

The primary texts that mention spiritual gifts are Romans 12:3-8, 1 Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 4:11-14, and 1 Peter 4:10-11. Other texts, such as Acts, Galatians, Thessalonians, Timothy, Hebrews, and James, also mention specific gifts being exercised.

Can We Discover New Spiritual Gifts?

While the Bible lists various spiritual gifts, it is possible that the Spirit may bestow additional gifts that conform to scriptural guidelines. Some examples might include intercession, deliverance, and interpretation.

How Do We Receive Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are not ours to claim, but rather are empowered by the Holy Spirit, who apportions them to each individual as He wills (1 Cor. 12:11). However, this does not undermine our responsibility to desire, pursue, and pray for spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1, 13, 39).

Can We Grow in Our Spiritual Gifts?

Yes, we can grow in the facility, accuracy, and effectiveness of our spiritual gifts. As we practice and mature, we become more effective in exercising our gifts. Virtually all who have the gift of teaching, for example, will testify that they have improved over time.

How Many Spiritual Gifts Can We Have?

While no Christian has every spiritual gift, and no one gift is given to every believer, there is no explicit limit on the number of gifts an individual can receive. Paul himself had multiple gifts, including apostleship, prophecy, teaching, healing, and more.

Can Non-Christians Operate in Spiritual Gifts?

It is unlikely that non-Christians can operate in spiritual gifts, as they are consistently portrayed as the empowering work of the Holy Spirit in and through God’s people. However, God’s common grace can sometimes allow unbelievers to display supernatural power, which may resemble spiritual gifts.

Are Spiritual Gifts Miraculous?

All spiritual gifts are supernatural in that they are manifestations of the Holy Spirit. However, some gifts are more overtly miraculous in nature, such as healing or prophecy.

Can Women Exercise Spiritual Gifts?

Yes, women can exercise spiritual gifts. In fact, women prophesied and spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:17-18), and Philip had four daughters who prophesied (Acts 21:9). Paul also approves of women praying and prophesying in the corporate gathering of the local church (1 Cor. 11:4-5).

How Do We Identify Our Spiritual Gifts?

Rather than taking a spiritual gifts inventory test, we should focus on loving and serving others in concrete acts of ministry. As we step out and begin to serve, our gifts will likely become apparent. By asking “Who is in need?” rather than “What is my gift?”, we can discover our spiritual gifts in the midst of serving others.

What is the Purpose of Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are not an end in themselves, but rather a means by which the Spirit enables and empowers us to help one another grow up in conformity to the image of Jesus. They serve to enhance and expand the fruit of the Spirit in our lives and in the lives of others.
