When Love Meets Hostility
A Personal Struggle
As I navigated my part-time job at a bank, I found myself facing a daily challenge: dealing with a coworker who seemed to take pleasure in hurting me. Paula’s constant jabs and condescending remarks left me feeling resentful and sorry for myself. I wondered how I could maintain my peace and composure in the face of such hostility.
Seeking Guidance
I turned to God, asking for wisdom on how to handle the situation. I knew that responding in kind would only escalate the problem, but it was hard not to harbor anger and resentment. The Lord reminded me of His teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus instructs us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44).
The Power of Gentle Words
As I prayed for Paula, I was reminded of the verse, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (NIV). I decided to take a different approach, seeking to be friendly and thoughtful toward her. To my surprise, our relationship transformed, and we became good friends. This experience taught me that love is indeed God’s answer to hostility.
God’s Recipe for Dealing with Enemies
Jesus’ teachings offer a counterintuitive approach to dealing with those who hurt us. He instructs us to:
- Love our enemies and bless them
- Pray for those who persecute us
- Return good for evil
Praying for Our Enemies
As I prayed for Paula, I began to see her in a different light. I realized that her behavior was likely a result of her own struggles and pain. This understanding sparked compassion within me, making it easier to forgive and pray for her.
Returning Good for Evil
When we choose to respond with kindness and love, we create an opportunity for God to work in the situation. As we return good for evil, we demonstrate His love and character.
