The Power of Faith in the Face of Impossibility

A Challenge to Follow Jesus

When Jesus’ disciples asked, “Who then can be saved?” they were met with a profound response. A rich young man had just walked away, unable to surrender his worldly possessions to follow Jesus. This encounter highlights the struggle many face in our affluent society: giving up everything to pursue a life of faith.

The Difficulty of Letting Go

Jesus acknowledged the challenge, stating that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the “eye of a needle” than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God. This phrase, often misunderstood, refers to a small opening in a city gate where camels could be tied up. The idea of a camel squeezing through such a narrow space seems absurd, illustrating the immense difficulty of surrendering wealth and status.

Faith in the Impossible

Perhaps you’re facing your own “impossibility” today. It’s in these moments that we’re reminded of the power of faith. As the classic hymn goes:

“Got any rivers you think are uncrossable?
Got any mountains, you can’t tunnel through?
God specialises in things thought impossible
And he can do what no other power can do!”

Trusting in God’s Power

Father God, help us see the impossible in a new light today. We surrender our mountains, our uncrossable rivers, and our loved ones who turn away from Jesus, knowing that you specialize in doing the impossible every day. Your power is not limited by human understanding, and we trust in your ability to overcome any obstacle.

Embracing the Impossible

When we say, “I am a Christian,” we’re not just stating a fact – we’re embracing a way of life that defies human logic. We’re acknowledging that our faith is built on the foundation of God’s power to do the impossible. And it’s in this trust that we find the strength to persevere, even when faced with the most daunting challenges.
