The Freedom of Embracing Our Limits
In a world that constantly tells us to look within ourselves for meaning and purpose, it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of self-discovery and self-improvement. But what if this focus on self is actually misguided? What if the key to true peace and fulfillment lies not in our own abilities or achievements, but in embracing our limitations and recognizing the limitless nature of God?
Jen Wilkin, author of “None Like Him: 10 Ways God Is Different from Us (and Why That’s a Good Thing),” argues that our primary problem as Christians is not that we lack self-worth or significance, but that we lack awe. We have lost sight of the transcendent God who is worthy of our worship and reverence.
The Dangers of Self-Focus
When we focus on our own strengths and weaknesses, we can easily become consumed by pride or self-loathing. We may try to overcome our limitations through self-effort or strive for perfection, but ultimately, we will always fall short. This self-focus can lead to anxiety, depression, and a sense of discontentment.
In contrast, when we recognize our limits and acknowledge God’s limitless power, wisdom, and knowledge, we can experience true freedom and peace. We are no longer burdened by the need to be perfect or in control, and we can rest in the knowledge that God is sovereign over all things.
The Importance of Awe
The fear of the Lord, as described in Psalm 111:10, is the beginning of wisdom. This fear is not a trembling fear, but a reverent awe that recognizes God’s greatness and majesty. When we cultivate this awe, we begin to see ourselves and our limitations in the light of God’s limitless nature.
This perspective change can have a profound impact on our lives. We can stop striving for self-sufficiency and instead, rely on God’s strength and guidance. We can trust in his sovereignty, even when we don’t understand what’s happening in our lives. And we can find joy and contentment in the knowledge that we are loved and valued by a God who is far greater than we can imagine.
The Freedom to Rest
Embracing our limits is not about becoming passive or complacent; it’s about recognizing our place in the grand scheme of things. It’s about acknowledging that we are not God, and that we don’t have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders.
When we rest in God’s limitless power and wisdom, we can experience a freedom that we’ve never known before. We can stop trying to control everything and instead, trust in God’s goodness and sovereignty. We can rest in the knowledge that he is working all things together for our good, even when we don’t understand what’s happening.
In the end, embracing our limits is not about us; it’s about God. It’s about recognizing his greatness and majesty, and worshiping him as the limitless, all-powerful God that he is.
