The Unrivaled Value of Being a Girl
When I glanced around my church on a recent Sunday, I noticed what many churches experience every week: more women than men. But this phenomenon is not new; Christianity has always been a majority-female religion. It’s ironic that the secular world portrays Christianity as sexist, when in reality, Jesus and his church have consistently elevated and empowered women.
Created in God’s Image
The evangelical Protestant church in the United States is currently 55 percent female and 45 percent male. This demographic is not a coincidence. We are created in the image of our good God, designed to reflect his character and take after him. As Jen Wilkin notes, God calls us to reflect his attributes: holiness, love, justice, goodness, mercy, graciousness, faithfulness, truthfulness, patience, and wisdom.
Made for Community
After creating Adam, God declared that it was not good for him to be alone. Eve was created from Adam’s rib, and God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. Just as the Trinity lives in community, so too were we created to live in community. We thrive when we prioritize relationships and live in light of each other.
A Unique and Compelling Calling
Right after God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone,” he created Eve as a helper fit for him. The original language and biblical context of Eve’s creation reveal that being a helper is not secondary or inconsequential. God, our sovereign Lord, is our helper, and he created woman to reflect this aspect of himself.
Redeemed and Restored
Through Jesus Christ, we are redeemed and restored. Our Savior paves the way to our restoration, transforming us from the inside out. We are not alienated forever from the God who made us; instead, Jesus came to serve and rescue us.
A Holy Mission
We have a sacred vocation as women. In this already-but-not-yet time, we are called to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” Our ministries vary as much as our hair color, body type, and style preferences, but we must all love God and love others by going and telling.
Countless Examples of Faithful Women
We have many awe-inspiring examples of imperfect women who served our perfect God before us. From Sarah to Deborah, Jael to Ruth, and Mary to Anna, we see God working through all kinds of personalities and circumstances.
Ezers in Our Communities
We can be helpers and protectors, delivering and comforting those around us. We each live in a unique time and place, and everything we have and experience is a gift and purposefully designed by God.
Proclaiming God’s Goodness
We get to proclaim the goodness of our God to the girls coming up after us. It’s our voice that will shape the next generation. We are part of a spiritual lineage, the genealogy of God’s people.
Prospering in God’s Presence
Throughout Scripture, we see a promise that those who belong to the Lord will prosper. Our God who dwells within us will make us like trees planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season, and our leaves will not wither. In God’s presence, there is fullness of joy, life abundant and everlasting.
