The Forgetting God: A Divine Attribute

Have you ever wondered why we can recall the smallest details of past hurts, yet struggle to remember what we had for breakfast? It’s as if our brains are wired to hold onto offenses, whether they’re our own or someone else’s. But what about God? Does He remember our sins like we do?

A Fundamental Difference

One key distinction between God and humanity is their approach to sin. While we tend to dwell on past mistakes, God takes a different path. As Max Lucado so eloquently puts it, “Just as it’s against your nature to eat trees and against mine to grow wings, it’s against God’s nature to remember forgiven sins.” This concept may seem foreign to us, but it’s an integral part of God’s character.

God Remembers His People

It’s essential to understand that God doesn’t forget everything. He remembers His people and the promises He made to them. However, when we confess and ask for forgiveness, He chooses to forget our sins. This isn’t just a figure of speech; it’s a fundamental aspect of His nature. In Isaiah 43:25, God declares, “I even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.”

Breaking Free from Guilt

We often find ourselves asking for forgiveness repeatedly, burdened by guilt and memories of past mistakes. But what if God could tell us, “I gave you forgiveness the first time you asked. I don’t remember it anymore”? This is precisely what He says in Jeremiah 31:34: “I will forgive their iniquity, and their sins I will remember no more.” We need to recognize that God has already given us forgiveness; we just need to accept it.

Embracing God’s Forgiveness

It’s time to let go of our guilt and shame, embracing the forgiveness that God has offered us. We don’t have to be held back by memories of past mistakes. Instead, we can move forward, confident in the knowledge that God has forgotten our sins and remembers us with love and compassion.
