The Blessing of Seeing and Hearing
In Luke 10:23-24, Jesus says to his disciples, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.” These words highlight the immense privilege of experiencing a personal relationship with God. However, many people miss out on this blessing due to various reasons. Let’s explore two significant obstacles that prevent us from seeing and hearing God.
Misplaced Focus
In Luke 10:19-20, Jesus reminds his disciples that their authority and power come from him, but warns them not to rejoice in their abilities alone. Instead, they should celebrate that their names are written in heaven. This caution is still relevant today. We often get caught up in the excitement of spiritual experiences, church activities, or our own accomplishments, forgetting the true source of our strength and purpose. We must shift our focus from the external “fireworks” to the inner reality of our relationship with God.
Loving the Unseen
In Matthew 10:37-39, Jesus confronts us with a challenging truth: our love for family, friends, and even ourselves can be greater than our love for him. We tend to prioritize human relationships and opinions over our relationship with God. Jesus calls us to take up our cross, surrendering everything to him, and seeking him first in every aspect of life. This surrender is not about losing our lives, but finding new life in him.
A Prayer of Surrender
Father, we pray that we may truly see and hear you in our lives. Help us to experience more of your presence and guidance. Forgive us for the things we put before you. We want to walk with you today, not on our own. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
