Discovering Our True Identity
As humans, we often try to fit in and be accepted by the world around us. We strive for popularity, appearance, and status quo, but these images are just an illusion. The Bible tells us that our true image is not based on external factors, but on being created in the image of God Himself.
From People Pleasing to Divine Acceptance
For many years, I struggled with people pleasing, trying to gain the world’s acceptance and recognition. But it was exhausting and unsatisfying. I finally realized that this world cannot give me a sense of peace about who I am. Only God can. He says I was created in His image, and in Christ, I am born again and renewed in His image.
Breaking Free from Illusions
What does this mean for us? It means that our looks, income, and social status have nothing to do with our true identity. We are God’s children, beloved and cherished, with our names written on His heart. As Francesca Battistelli so eloquently puts it: “I don’t need my name in lights / I’m famous in my Father’s eyes / Make no mistake / He knows my name / I’m not living for applause / I’m already so adored.”
Unity in Christ
In Christ, we are one with Him, defined only by His light, love, and the fruit of His Spirit. We no longer need to seek validation from the world around us. Instead, we can rest in knowing who we are in Him: loved, treasured, adored, and redeemed.
Prayer of Reflection
Dear Father, help us to stop seeking our identity from the world and start believing what our image is in You. You breathed life into us, handpicked us, and molded us to be exactly who You wanted us to be. Let us rest in knowing who we are in You. Amen.
