Unlocking the Power of Persistent Prayer: A Key to Deepening Your Relationship with God

The Power of Persistent Prayer

In the parable of the widow and the judge (Luke 18:1-8), Jesus teaches us the importance of persistence in prayer. This lesson is especially relevant for us today, as we live in the interval between Christ’s first and second comings.

Never Give Up

The parable tells the story of a widow who, despite being ignored by a corrupt judge, continues to plead her case until she receives justice. The judge, who “neither feared God nor cared about men,” is eventually worn down by the widow’s persistence (verse 5). If persistence can achieve results with a wicked judge, how much more can it accomplish with our loving Father in heaven?

The Lifeblood of Christianity

Prayer is the very lifeblood of Christianity. It is where our relationship with God begins, flourishes, and deepens. Prayer is one of the first signs of conversion (Acts 9:11), and neglecting it can lead to spiritual decay (Matthew 26:40-41). As Christians, we should always be interested in prayer and seek to understand its power and significance.

God’s Special Care for His People

The parable also teaches us that God has a special care for His elect people on earth. Jesus declares, “And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?… I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly” (verses 7-8). This truth should bring us comfort and confidence in our prayers.

The Doctrine of Election

The doctrine of election is a fundamental truth in Scripture. It reminds us that our salvation is not based on our own merit or goodness but on God’s sovereign choice. This truth should evoke praise and thanksgiving from all true Christians, who recognize that they would never have chosen God if He had not first chosen them.

Signs of Election

So, how can we know if we are among God’s elect? The Bible provides clear signs of election, including faith in Christ, conformity to His likeness, and a praying spirit (Romans 8:29-30; 1 Thessalonians 1:3-4). As our Lord says, “God’s elect are a people who cry out to him day and night” (verse 8). A prayerless person cannot be considered one of God’s elect.

The Secret to Keeping Faith Alive

The parable implies that persistent prayer is the secret to keeping our faith alive. As Augustine says, “When faith fails, prayer dies. In order to pray, then, we must have faith; and that our faith fail not, we must pray.” May we cultivate a spirit of persistent prayer, trusting that God will answer our cries and bring about justice in our lives.
