A Reminder for Weary Pastors: God’s Unwavering Love
As pastors, we face countless challenges and pressures. The demands of ministry can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to lose sight of what sustains us. But amidst the chaos, there’s a fundamental truth that can carry us through: God’s unwavering love.
The Power of Remembering
It’s simple yet profound: remembering who God is and His steadfast love can transform our vision and empower us to walk faithfully into each new day. When we recall God’s character, we begin to see the world through different eyes.
- He is gracious and merciful: The Lord is good to all, and His mercy is over all that He has made (Psalm 145:8-9; 86:15; 103:8, 11, 17).
- His love fills the earth: The earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord (Psalm 33:5).
Facing Challenges with Confidence
When evil news and taunts assail us, we can put them in their proper place by remembering God’s love. We can relocate the good news, recalling that:
- His love endures all day: The steadfast love of God endures all the day (Psalm 52:1).
- We are loved, not for our efforts: His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love (Psalm 147:10-11).
Practical Reminders
To keep God’s love at the forefront of our minds, we can:
- Use the word “my”: He is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer (Psalm 144:2).
- Plead His love: Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes (Psalm 119:124).
- Sing of His love: Sing of His steadfast love and His faithfulness (Psalm 59:16).
Jesus: The Embodiment of God’s Love
Jesus invites us to notice the care of a bird or a flower, revealing the Father’s love for us (Matthew 6:28-30). Paul reminds us that God’s love in Jesus:
- Prioritizes our meditation: Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7-8).
- Frames our prayers: That you may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge (Ephesians 3:18-19).
A Final Reminder
Dear Pastor, isn’t this why Jesus’s life is so precious to you? Isn’t this why you regard His death and resurrection with such reverence? His love remains, and it’s the source of our strength and hope. May we remember God’s unwavering love and let it carry us through the joys and challenges of ministry.
