The Glory War Within
As humans, we are hardwired to crave glory. We are drawn to things that shine, whether it’s a stunning sunset, a masterpiece of art, or a heroic act. This desire for glory is not just a quirk of human nature; it’s a fundamental aspect of who we are. And yet, this drive for glory can also lead us down a path of destruction.
The Problem of Self-Glory
When we pursue glory for ourselves, we become glory thieves. We steal the spotlight from God and demand to be the center of attention. We take credit for things we didn’t accomplish and punish those who get in our way. This self-glory is a toxic force that destroys relationships, fuels pride, and leaves us empty and unfulfilled.
The Only Satisfying Glory
There is only one source of glory that can satisfy our deepest longings: God’s glory. His greatness, power, and majesty are the only things that can fill the void within us. When we live for God’s glory, we experience a sense of purpose and fulfillment that we can’t find anywhere else.
The Glory War Rages On
But the glory war is not just an external battle; it’s an internal struggle. Our hearts are torn between our desire for self-glory and our need for God’s glory. We are tempted to revert back to our old ways, to seek glory in created things rather than in the Creator. This is why we need God’s grace to rescue us from our own glory thievery.
Hope in the Midst of Battle
There is hope for us, however. Jesus came to earth to live righteously on our behalf, to die for our sins, and to rise again, conquering sin and death. He offers us a new way to live, a way that is centered on God’s glory rather than our own. When we surrender to Him, we experience a transformation that changes everything.
Recapturing Our Humanity
Living in light of God’s glory is not just about being spiritual; it’s about recapturing our humanity. It’s about living the way we were designed to live, with God at the center of everything. When we do, we experience a sense of awe, wonder, and joy that we can’t find anywhere else.
A Vision of God’s Glory
In 1 Chronicles 29, David blesses the Lord in the presence of all the assembly, saying, “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.” This is the vision of God’s glory that we need to capture our hearts and imagination every day.
Take Time to Awe
Take time to let awe of God capture your thoughts, desires, and emotions. Let His glory transform you from the inside out. And then jump for joy that you are connected to this awesome God by grace.
