The Darkness and the Light: What Jesus Taught about Evil
Jesus, often addressed as “teacher,” emphasized the kingdom of God in his public ministry. However, this theme was not limited to the benevolent aspects of God’s reign. Jesus also taught about the awareness of evil, an enemy that opposes God and humanity.
The Enemy Revealed
In parables such as the farmer and the seed (Mark 4:15) and the weeds (Matthew 13:24-30), Jesus spoke of an enemy who seeks to undermine the kingdom. He explicitly identified this enemy as “the evil one” or “the devil.” This awareness of evil is a crucial aspect of Christian theology, as it acknowledges the presence of a malevolent force that opposes God’s will.
The Nature of Evil
Jesus’ teachings on evil were not limited to parables. He warned his disciples about the dangers of Satan, emphasizing the importance of fearing God rather than the devil (Matthew 10:28). Jesus also described the Pharisees and teachers of the law as “a wicked and adulterous generation” (Matthew 12:39), highlighting the consequences of succumbing to evil.
The Devil’s Mischief
Jesus taught that individuals are the objects of Satanic mischief. Peter, for example, was warned about Satan’s desire to sift him like wheat (Luke 22:31-32). This highlights the need for divine protection and the importance of prayer in resisting evil.
The Lord’s Prayer and the Awareness of Evil
The Lord’s Prayer includes a petition to be delivered from evil (Matthew 6:13). This acknowledges the presence of evil and the need for divine protection. Jesus practiced what he preached, praying for his disciples’ preservation from the evil one (John 17:15).
The Defeat of the Devil
A key aspect of Christ’s incarnation was to defeat the devil. This involved both his active obedience (his life) and his passive obedience (his death). Jesus resisted devilish temptations, proved himself to be the faithful Adam and Israel, and went on the offensive against the devil’s darkness.
The Final Defeat
While Christ’s death dealt a significant blow to the devil, the final defeat awaits. Christians live between the cross and the coming again of the victor, when evil will be ultimately vanquished. Until then, believers must remain vigilant, aware of the presence of evil and the need for divine protection.
Conclusion
Jesus’ teachings on evil emphasize the importance of acknowledging the presence of a malevolent force that opposes God’s will. By understanding the nature of evil and the devil’s mischief, Christians can better resist evil and seek divine protection. The defeat of the devil is a central aspect of Christ’s mission, and believers must remain vigilant until the final victory is achieved.
