The Power of Conversations: Shaping Our Understanding of God’s World
In an ideal world, our conversations with God would be seamless, guiding us towards our purpose in His creation. However, sin has complicated matters, making effective communication a challenge. As parents, we often struggle to connect with our children, and they, in turn, may resist the guidance we try to offer.
I recall a conversation with my elementary-aged son, where he quickly dismissed my advice, responding with a confident “I’m already doing that.” This exchange was part of a larger pattern, where he would volley back reasons why he didn’t need to listen to me. It was a classic case of verbal tennis, with neither of us willing to concede.
Breaking Down Barriers in Communication
In such moments, it’s essential to pause and reassess our approach. I asked my son to consider the thoughts racing through his mind when I interrupted my tasks to offer guidance. Did he truly believe I was invested in his well-being, or was he simply tolerating my input? His hesitant response revealed a disconnect between his perception and reality.
To drive the point home, I shifted the conversation to a more relatable topic: kittens and their mothers. My son estimated that kittens stay with their mothers for around two to three months. I used this opportunity to highlight the significance of our extended time together as a family, emphasizing that God intends for us to learn and grow through our interactions.
The Ordinary Path to Wisdom
This everyday exchange is a microcosm of the larger narrative arc of life. We enter the world as novices, gradually gaining understanding through conversations with others. This process is beautifully illustrated in popular literature, where protagonists like Harry Potter and the children of Narnia navigate unfamiliar worlds, learning from those who guide them.
The book of Proverbs underscores the importance of conversation in shaping our understanding of God’s world. It presents a father’s passionate plea to his son, urging him to seek wisdom and avoid foolishness. This transformation from ignorance to wisdom occurs through the ordinary medium of people talking to each other about God and His impact on life.
A Lifetime of Transforming Conversations
As we mature, we come to realize that wise individuals crave conversations that continue throughout their lives. They surround themselves with people who will engage in God-oriented discussions, seeking to understand themselves and the world around them. Moreover, they commit to joining the conversation, speaking to others to enrich their lives.
The Bible portrays the wise person as someone who thrives in a sea of words, without becoming overwhelmed. Even after Jesus pours out His Holy Spirit, He continues to mature His people through their conversations with each other. As believers, we are called to participate in an ongoing conversation that links Christ and faith to everyday life.
Embracing the Ministry of Words
Jesus’s life was marked by constant conversation – formal teaching, small group discussions, and one-on-one interactions. As His followers, united to Him through the Spirit, we are empowered to speak like He does. We are called to engage in godly conversations, recognizing that those around us – including our children – need them.
In essence, our journey into God’s family begins with words, and our growth within His family continues through words. Through tireless conversations, we come to understand God, ourselves, others, and our place in His world.
