As I reflect on the state of our communities, I’m reminded of a profound warning from Jesus: “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold” (Matthew 24:10). This caution wasn’t just about the world outside; it was a wake-up call to His followers, to us. It’s a stark reminder that our own hearts can grow numb, even in the midst of faith.
Have you noticed how easily we can become embroiled in bitter debates, our words dripping with malice? We lament the world’s lack of Christianity, yet tolerate our own lack of Christlikeness. When we discuss the ills of society, do our words reek of resentment or rise as prayers? The Latin root of “rancor” means “to stink,” and that’s precisely what our criticism and fault-finding exude – a noxious odor that ascends to God.
But there’s hope. Intercessory prayer, on the other hand, is a sweet fragrance to God. When we choose to emerge from trials more like Jesus, our lives become “a fragrance of Christ to God” (2 Corinthians 2:15). It’s nothing short of amazing: despite our flaws and weaknesses, we can still become like Christ in this harsh world.
May this be our passionate pursuit: to become a fragrance of Christ to God. As we strive to reflect His character, may our lives be a refreshing balm to those around us, rather than a putrid stench. The choice is ours.
