Unity in Diversity: Understanding Christ’s Gifts to the Church
Ephesians 4:7-16 marks a significant shift in Paul’s thought, from emphasizing unity to celebrating diversity within that unity. In this passage, we explore Christ’s role in gifting individual believers for the greater good of the church.
The Gift of Ministry Grace
Paul notes that “grace was given to each one of us” (Ephesians 4:7). This “grace” is not saving or sanctifying grace but ministry grace, given to believers for corporate service and edification. Each member of the church has a unique gift, distributed sovereignly by Christ.
Christ’s Ascension and Descent
Paul cites Psalm 68:18 to support his claim, adding a Christological interpretation. Christ, the victorious conqueror, ascends to his throne in heaven after defeating spiritual forces. Instead of receiving gifts, Christ gives gifts to his followers. His ascension implies a previous descent, which is likely a reference to his incarnation and death.
The Gifts of Leadership
Christ gives leaders to the church, including apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers. These individuals are gifted by Christ and given to the church for its unity and maturity. The goal of these gifts is to equip the saints for the work of ministry, building up the body of Christ until all attain maturity.
Maturity and Unity
The ultimate goal of Christ’s gifting the church with leaders is for his body to become spiritually mature. Believers should attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, as well as mature manhood, measured by the stature of the fullness of Christ.
