Unlocking the Unity of Scripture
For many Christians, the Bible can seem like a vast and intimidating book. We may read it piecemeal, finding inspiration in individual verses or passages, but struggle to see how they fit into the larger narrative. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in biblical theology, which seeks to understand the Bible as a unified, historically rooted, and Christ-centered story of God’s redemption of humanity.
A New Series: Short Studies in Biblical Theology
To help bridge the gap between academic biblical theology and everyday believers, I am excited to be a part of a new series of books called Short Studies in Biblical Theology. This series, co-edited with Dr. Miles Van Pelt, aims to provide accessible and engaging studies of key biblical themes, written by capable scholars and church leaders. Each volume will take a whole-Bible approach, tracing a particular theme through Scripture and demonstrating how it points to Jesus Christ.
Renewing Biblical Theology
The goal of this series is to renew biblical theology among scholars and to enliven the hearts and minds of Christ’s disciples around the world. As editors, we believe that seeing the whole Bible as a unified story of God’s gracious acts of redemption is one of the most thrilling discoveries a Christian can make. Our hope is that these studies will magnify the Savior and build up his church, by strengthening believers in their grasp of life-giving truths.
Initial Volumes
The first volume in the series, written by Graeme Goldsworthy, explores the theme of “Son of God” throughout the Bible. Future volumes will include studies on marriage, covenant, and work, written by respected scholars such as Tom Schreiner and Jim Hamilton. We are eager to see how these studies will help to remedy the widespread tendency to treat the Bible as a collection of isolated texts, rather than as a coherent whole.
A Growing Understanding
As Richard Gaffin notes, the church today still struggles to appreciate the historic, progressive nature of revelation. We believe that this series holds important promise for helping to remedy this situation, by providing pastors and their congregations with studies that foster a growing understanding and appreciation of the redemptive-historical flow and Christ-centered focus of Scripture. We look forward with anticipation to the appearance of these volumes and to the impact they will have on the church.
