The Birth of the ESV: A 20-Year Legacy of Faith and Scholarship

A Legacy of Faith: The Story Behind the English Standard Version

This year marks a significant milestone in the history of Bible translation – the 20th anniversary of the English Standard Version (ESV). To commemorate this occasion, we take a journey through the remarkable story of how the ESV came to be, as told by Dr. Lane Dennis, founding CEO and Publisher of Crossway.

The Seeds of Vision

The idea for the ESV was born out of a need for an essentially literal translation that could serve the global church. Dr. Dennis recalls the early 1990s, when he discussed this vision with others, but it seemed too daunting a task to undertake. That was until John Piper’s phone call in 1997, which sparked a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the creation of the ESV.

A Team of Scholars

Dr. Dennis assembled a team of esteemed scholars, including Wayne Grudem, J.I. Packer, Gordon Wenham, Kent Hughes, and others, to form the Translation Oversight Committee (TOC). This team of twelve experts began their work in 1998, meeting numerous times in various locations around the world. Their dedication and expertise were instrumental in shaping the ESV into the trusted translation it is today.

A Community of Contributors

Beyond the core TOC team, over 50 review scholars and 100 advisory council members contributed to the ESV’s development. This collaborative effort ensured that the translation was thoroughly vetted and refined, resulting in a work of exceptional quality.

Faith and Providence

Dr. Dennis reflects on the ESV’s story as one of God’s leading and provision. From its humble beginnings to the present day, the project has been marked by moments of faith and decisive interventions. The Lord has equipped and entrusted Crossway with the resources and people necessary to undertake this vital work.

A Treasure Transmitted

The ESV is a treasure that has been passed down to us, and one that we are committed to transmitting to future generations. As Dr. Dennis notes, “We look back on this and can see the Lord’s hand over and over again.” May the ESV continue to be a blessing to the body of Christ, and may its legacy endure for years to come.
