The Road to Marriage: A Journey of Self-Discovery
In today’s fast-paced society, the path to marriage is often paved with detours and missteps. With the rise of instant gratification and self-centeredness, it’s no wonder that many individuals struggle to navigate the complexities of dating and relationships.
A Culture of Now
We live in a world where everything is at our fingertips. We can access endless entertainment, order food with the click of a button, and connect with others from the comfort of our own homes. However, this convenience comes at a cost. Our impatience and selfishness have led to a tidal wave of premarital sex, with more than half of us giving ourselves away before we even graduate high school.
Christians Not Immune
Unfortunately, Christians are not immune to these cultural influences. As Marshall Segal notes in his book, “Not Yet Married: The Pursuit of Joy in Singleness and Dating,” many of us have got it all wrong when it comes to dating. We hurry to date as soon as we hit high school but wait to settle down and marry until after we’ve started our career and enjoyed some freedom. We come in and out of relationships like buying new shoes, slipping off anyone who begins to feel uncomfortable or inconvenient.
Survey Says
In May 2017, a survey of nearly 7,000 people revealed some interesting insights into how we view (and pursue) marriage and dating today. The results highlight the need for a shift in our approach to relationships and marriage.
Infographic Insights
Some key takeaways from the survey include:
- The majority of respondents believe that marriage is an important institution, but many are delaying marriage until later in life.
- Most people value saving themselves sexually, but struggle to prioritize this in their relationships.
- Technology has made it easier to give ourselves away too soon to someone we don’t even know.
A New Approach
As we navigate the complexities of dating and relationships, it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate our approach. By prioritizing self-discovery, communication, and commitment, we can build stronger, healthier relationships that honor God.
