Discovering the Majesty of God in Nature’s Wonders
As I stood on the balcony of my hotel room, overlooking the stunning southern coast of Sri Lanka, I was struck by the breathtaking beauty of God’s creation. The majestic scenery before me evoked a deep sense of wonder and awe, drawing me closer to the Creator Himself.
A Lesson from a Young Boy’s Discovery
A poignant story comes to mind, one that illustrates the importance of perspective. A young boy once stumbled upon a copper coin on the road and was overjoyed by his discovery. From that day on, his gaze was fixed on the ground, searching for more treasures. While he may have found some coins, he missed out on the beauty of the world around him – the sunsets, trees, birds, and clouds.
A Swedish Preacher’s Inspiration
In contrast, Carl Boberg, a Swedish preacher, was inspired by the beauty of nature after a storm in 1885. He penned a poem, later translated into multiple languages, which became a beloved hymn. The hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” gained popularity after George Beverly Shea sang it at a Billy Graham crusade in 1955.
The Power of Nature to Inspire
The lyrics of the hymn beautifully capture the essence of God’s majesty: “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder / Consider all the works Thy hands have made, / I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, / Thy power throughout the Universe displayed…” When we take the time to appreciate God’s creation, we are reminded of His greatness and our souls are inspired to sing His praise.
Worshiping the Creator, Not the Creation
As we marvel at the beauty of nature, let us not forget that our worship is directed towards the Creator, not the creation itself. As Colossians 1:16 reminds us, “For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things were created by Him and for Him.”
Finding Inspiration in God’s Creation
So, the next time you’re feeling discouraged or uninspired, take a moment to appreciate the wonders of God’s creation. Look up at the stars, listen to the birds singing, or feel the gentle breeze on your face. As you do, you’ll surely be reminded of the greatness of our God and your soul will sing His praise.
