Embracing the Call to Discipleship
As followers of Christ, we’re all called to disciple others, but for many of us, this task can feel daunting. We may wonder if we’re qualified, or if we have what it takes to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life. But what does it really mean to be a good discipler?
A Personal Reflection
For Garrett Kell, pastor and author, the journey of discipleship began with a chance encounter with Shelby Abbott, a ministry leader who saw potential in the young believer. Shelby took Garrett under his wing, asking questions, challenging him to grow, and opening the Bible together. One particular lesson stuck with Garrett – the importance of not giving the devil a chance, as Romans 13:14 says. Shelby’s guidance helped Garrett make wise decisions and avoid temptation.
A Life Transformed
But Garrett’s journey to discipleship wasn’t without its challenges. Growing up, he attended church, but it wasn’t until he met Dave, an old friend who had found faith, that he began to question his own beliefs. Dave’s bold declaration of love for Jesus sparked a curiosity in Garrett, and eventually, he began to read the Bible and confront his own sin. It was a turning point that would change the course of his life.
The Power of Intentional Investment
Garrett’s story highlights the importance of intentional investment in the lives of fellow believers. As he looks back on his journey, he’s grateful for the people God brought into his life at every stage, discipling and investing in him. This kind of intentional investment is essential for spiritual growth and development.
Breaking Down Barriers
So, what holds us back from discipling others? Is it fear, lack of knowledge, or uncertainty about our qualifications? Garrett’s story shows us that it’s not about being perfect; it’s about being willing to take the first step. By embracing our own brokenness and seeking guidance from others, we can become the disciplers God calls us to be.
A Call to Action
As we reflect on our own journeys, let’s ask ourselves: Who has discipled us in the past? What lessons have we learned from them? And who can we intentionally invest in today? By embracing the call to discipleship, we can create a ripple effect of spiritual growth and transformation in the lives of those around us.
