Shaped by the Winds of Social Media
In the heart of Colorado’s Garden of the Gods, a lone evergreen tree stands as a testament to the power of environmental forces. Its twisted, gnarled trunk and branches, shaped by the relentless winds, tell a story of resilience and adaptation. This natural wonder serves as a poignant reminder that living things are molded by their surroundings – a truth that applies equally to humans.
The Omnipresent Influence of Social Media
In today’s digital age, the winds that shape us are no longer just natural, but also virtual. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube have become an integral part of our daily lives, with over 70% of American adults using them every day. The statistics are staggering: teens spend up to nine hours a day consuming entertainment media, while tweens devote six hours a day to these platforms.
The Impact on Our Lives
As we navigate the vast expanse of social media, we are constantly exposed to curated images, edited narratives, and manipulated realities. These digital constructs can have a profound impact on our self-perception, identity, and values. Medical research has shown that scrolling on our phones can release dopamine in the brain, negatively affecting impulse control and leading to addiction.
The Discipling Power of Social Media
As a mother of four girls and a minister to women, I am deeply concerned about the influence of social media on the females in my sphere. These platforms are discipling us, shaping our thoughts, and molding our perceptions of ourselves and others. The constant stream of information can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy, comparison, and anxiety.
A Call to Awareness and Action
It’s time for us to recognize the profound impact of social media on our lives and take steps to mitigate its negative effects. By setting boundaries, limiting screen time, and engaging in offline activities, we can begin to break free from the grip of social media. Moreover, by turning to our Creator and Savior, we can find true meaning, purpose, and fulfillment in life.
A Choice to Make
We are made in the image of God, but online, it’s not His image we behold. Instead, we are confronted with the images of lesser gods: beauty, ability, sex, politics, and materialism. These false idols promise satisfaction but deliver only emptiness. We must choose which current of wind we will allow to shape our lives – the gales of social media or the gentle breeze of the Holy Spirit.
A Promise of Transformation
As we behold the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into His image from one degree of glory to another. This is the promise of God, and it is available to all who seek Him. Let us turn away from the false gods of social media and turn towards the living, active Word of God, which has the power to shape us from the inside out.
