Discovering the Heart of God through Gratitude
When we reflect on our blessings, we’re not just counting our lucky stars – we’re rehearsing God’s accomplishments. And when we rehearse God’s accomplishments, we discover His heart. It’s not just about the good gifts we receive, but about the Good Giver Himself.
A Path Out of Darkness
Gratitude has a profound effect on our lives. It shifts our focus away from dread and towards God. As the apostle Paul reminds us, “Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20NLT). This simple act of thanksgiving can be the surest path out of a slump.
Even in the Darkest Moments
But what about those disastrous days when gratitude feels like a distant memory? Can we still find it in our hearts to give thanks? Jesus did, even on the night He was betrayed. As Scripture tells us, “the Lord Jesus took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it” (1 Corinthians 11:23-24NLT). How often do we see the words “betrayed” and “thanks” in the same sentence – much less in the same heart?
The Power of Gratitude
So what happens when we choose to give thanks, even in the midst of turmoil? We open ourselves up to experience God’s presence in a deeper way. We begin to see that gratitude is not just a feeling, but a choice. And when we make that choice, we discover the heart of God in a way that transforms our lives.
A Heart of Gratitude
So take a moment to reflect on your blessings. Rehearse God’s accomplishments in your life. Discover His heart, and let gratitude be the catalyst for a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Him. As you do, you’ll find that gratitude leaves you looking at God, and away from dread.
