Embracing Guidance on Life’s Journey
As we navigate the twists and turns of life, it’s easy to get caught up in our own independence and self-reliance. But what if we’re meant to journey with a guide, rather than going it alone?
A Lesson from a Toddler
I recently took my two-year-old grandson on a hike along the coast. The 8-kilometer trail was a mix of easy and challenging stretches, with one particularly treacherous section. As his vigilant coach, I lifted him over difficult parts, but he was determined to walk on his own. Each time, he’d say, “My do it!” But when I glanced away for a split second, he slipped and was left dangling over a 5-meter rocky drop to the ocean. My heart skipped a beat as I quickly lifted him to safety. Unfazed, he simply said, “Thanks, Papa.”
The Danger of Self-Reliance
This experience reminded me that we often act like toddlers towards God. We think we can handle life on our own, but we’re not meant to go it alone. We’re invited to journey with God, just as my grandson was meant to hike with me.
David’s Prayer
David’s prayer in Psalm 139 inspires me to move from self-reliance to God dependence. “Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong — then guide me on the road to eternal life” (Psalm 139:23-24, The Message).
A Humble Heart
How do you allow the Spirit to work in your life when you’re tempted to do things your way? I pray for humility to recognize when I’m distancing myself from God. I pray for the courage to come to Him and allow Him to work powerfully in my life.
Action Step: Embracing Guidance
Pick a childhood activity you used to do with a parent, grandparent, or close family member. Whether it’s baking, mowing the lawn, or using technology, allow them to help you in ways they used to, even if you don’t need their help anymore. In prayer, thank God for the people in your life who have helped shape you into the person you are today.
