Breaking Free from Tech Addiction: Finding Spiritual Balance

The Unseen Dangers of Technology Addiction

A World Consumed by Gadgets

We live in an era where technology has revolutionized the way we work and communicate. Computers, cell phones, and email have become essential tools for productivity and efficiency. However, there’s a darker side to this technological advancement. An addiction, often referred to as “Crackberry,” has taken hold, allowing technology to control our lives.

Tragic Consequences

Recent events have highlighted the devastating consequences of this addiction. A train wreck in California was caused by an engineer who was texting on his cell phone instead of focusing on the tracks ahead. Similarly, a young boy lost his life while texting and crossing the street. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of technology addiction.

Relationships Suffer

A study of traveling executives revealed that a third of them prefer their PDA over their spouse. Moreover, 85% of them bring their devices into the bedroom, and 84% check their emails before going to bed and as soon as they wake up. This constant distraction has led to serious relationship problems, particularly in marriages, as individuals focus more on their gadgets than on their partners.

Experts Weigh In

Experts are urging people to “turn it off” and focus on nurturing real relationships with living human beings. But what if we could apply this same level of dedication to our spiritual lives? Imagine if we were as immersed in the Word of God as we are in our technology.

A Fresh Perspective

What if the last thing we read at night and the first thing we read in the morning were words of Scripture? Many believers claim to want to serve God and obey His word, but how many are actually reading the Bible to learn how? Alexander Campbell once wrote, “The Bible is to the intellectual and moral world of man what the sun is to the planets in our system,–the fountain and source of light and life, spiritual and eternal.”

A World Transformed

Imagine if people were addicted to their Bibles like they are to their PDAs. The world would be transformed. We would be more focused on God’s word and less consumed by technology.

A Call to Action

Lord, help us focus on You and give us a fresh hunger for Your word. Amen.

Reflection

What can you do to focus on God’s word this week in a fresh way? Do you need to discipline yourself and your devices of technology? Take a moment to reflect on your priorities and make a change today.
