The Power of Promises
As we navigate life’s ups and downs, we often find ourselves making deals with a higher power or with others. But do we truly follow through on our commitments?
A Lesson from the Barn
A farmer’s close call while repairing his barn roof serves as a poignant reminder. As he began to slide off, he prayed for salvation, promising to change his ways in return. Miraculously, his pants caught on a nail, saving him from harm. But instead of gratitude, he quickly attributed his rescue to the nail. This incident raises an important question: do we make promises we don’t intend to keep?
Forgetting Our Vows
It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and make deals we don’t fully consider. But what happens when our prayers are answered or our circumstances change? Do we conveniently forget the commitments we made? This pattern of behavior can damage our relationships with others and with God.
A Biblical Perspective
Jesus teaches us about the importance of keeping our word in Matthew 5:33-37. He cautions against making oaths, emphasizing that our yes should mean yes, and our no should mean no. Anything beyond this, he warns, comes from evil. This passage encourages us to be people of integrity, following through on our promises and avoiding empty vows.
A Prayer for Integrity
May we strive to be individuals of our word, honoring our commitments to God and to others. May our yes be yes, and our no be no, reflecting the character of a faithful and trustworthy God.
