Rearranging Our Lives for Deeper Connection
When I visited friends in another country, I was taken aback when they invited their neighbors over to meet me. Their cozy home seemed perfect for intimate gatherings, but I wondered how they would accommodate a larger group. On the evening of the gathering, I was amazed to see over twenty people comfortably seated in their living room. The secret to their hospitality lay in their willingness to rearrange their space. They had removed most of the furniture, lining the edges with chairs and setting up a low table with refreshments in the center.
Creating Space for Spiritual Growth
Similarly, many of us yearn for a deeper connection with God, but despite our best efforts, we struggle to experience intimacy with Him. We devour books, attend seminars, and participate in prayer groups, yet little seems to change. Perhaps the issue lies not with our intentions, but with the way we’ve structured our lives. Just as my friends rearranged their furniture to accommodate their guests, we may need to reassess our priorities and habits to make room for spiritual growth.
Removing Distractions, Creating Space
In her book, Sacred Rhythms, Ruth Haley Barton eloquently argues that our busy lives, even our religious activities, can crowd out the spaces where God wants to meet us. To experience true transformation, we must make a conscious effort to create space for God to work in our lives. This might mean unplugging from technology, clearing our calendars, and setting aside extended periods for reflection and prayer. When we make room for Him, our Father will meet us there.
The Power of Intentional Living
By rearranging our lives, we can create an environment conducive to spiritual growth. We can learn to use our time more wisely, prioritizing activities that nurture our souls. As we intentionally create space for God, we open ourselves up to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Him. Will you take the first step today?
