Shining a Light in a Politically Sensitive World
The Bible reminds us that “you are the light of the world” and that our good deeds can bring glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14, 16). This powerful message was recently brought to life through the selfless actions of two young men who served as interpreters during a humanitarian medical project in their country.
Two Young Men, One Shared Purpose
Despite their differences, these two students from the same country and faith tradition worked together to make a difference. One was confident and charismatic, with a strong background in philosophy, psychology, and culture. The other was more reserved, with a technical focus to his studies. Yet, both shared a willingness to serve, translating for medical professionals and entertaining children with games and songs.
A Deeper Connection
As the project came to a close, it was clear that these young men had formed a deep bond with the team. They lingered, eager to talk and share their thoughts. The more outgoing of the two asked to chat for just a little longer, while the other simply wept, overcome with emotion. In this moment, words were unnecessary; eye contact spoke directly to the heart.
The Power of Actions
In this politically sensitive country, open discussions of faith were not possible. Yet, the seeds of Christ’s message were sown through the actions of these young men and the medical team. As St. Francis of Assisi so wisely said, “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” Their selflessness and kindness spoke volumes, reminding us that our actions can be just as powerful as our words.
A Lesson in Humility
As we reflect on this experience, we are reminded of the importance of humility. We often think that only our words can be used by the Holy Spirit, but this encounter shows us that our actions can be just as crucial. May we learn to trust in the power of our deeds to bring glory to God, even when words are not possible.
A Call to Action
As we go about our daily lives, may we remember the impact that these two young men had on those around them. May we be inspired to shine our light, to serve with kindness and humility, and to trust in the power of our actions to bring glory to our Father in heaven.
