Abundant Harvest: A Testament to Faith
As the Psalmist so eloquently puts it, “They are like trees along a river bank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail” (Psalm 1:3). This beautiful imagery resonated deeply with me on a recent crisp autumn day.
A Family Affair
With my husband home between trips, the grandkids out of school early, and the apples ripe for the picking, it was the perfect opportunity to create some unforgettable memories. Our daughter and granddaughters hopped onto the tractor’s front scoop, ready to tackle the big old apple tree in our pasture. I couldn’t resist joining in on the fun, leaving my computer work behind. Laughter filled the air as we worked together, filling a large container with juicy apples.
The Mysterious Apple Tree
As I gazed at the ancient tree, I marveled at its ability to thrive despite its rotten trunk. It was clear that its deep roots had grown extensively, nourishing the tree and allowing it to flourish. This natural wonder got me thinking about the parallels between this tree and Christians.
Fruitful Lives
Just like the apple tree, believers can produce fruit in all seasons, regardless of their circumstances. My brother, who lived with Lou Gehrig’s disease, was a shining example of this. Confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak, he still radiated Christ’s love, drawing people to him. His nurses would often visit, sharing their deepest concerns with him, and several even came to faith in Christ. Despite his physical limitations, Frank’s roots in Christ remained strong, bearing fruit in the lives of those around him.
Finding Strength in Weakness
Perhaps you’re feeling discouraged, struggling to come to terms with your own limitations. I want to encourage you to shift your focus from what you can “do” to simply “being” in Christ. Abide in Him, and He will produce fruit in and through you, even when you feel weak or ineffective. Rest in His presence, and He will cause you to bear much fruit, just like the old apple tree.
A Prayer of Gratitude
Father, thank You for producing fruit in and through us, even when we feel like we’re not doing enough. Help us to grow our roots deep into the knowledge of Your love, so we can bear fruit regardless of our circumstances. Thank You for reminding us that we can’t do anything without Christ, and that it’s good to rely on You for everything. Amen.
