The Good Shepherd: A Lesson in Dependence
As I sat with my family on a remote fly-in lake, surrounded by nature’s beauty, I was reminded of the powerful analogy of the Good Shepherd. Our morning devotional centered around John 10:14-15, where Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me…I lay down my life for the sheep.”
A Fresh Perspective
My 12-year-old grandson, David, who was working on a research paper about shepherds and sheep, shared some insightful observations. His comments not only made me proud of him and his teacher (my daughter), but also struck a chord deep within me.
The Helpless Sheep
David pointed out that sheep are completely dependent on their shepherd for survival. They cannot defend themselves, clean themselves, or even recognize danger. If they continue to stray, the shepherd may need to take drastic measures, like breaking their leg, to prevent them from harming themselves. This realization hit me like a ton of bricks: we, too, are like sheep, utterly dependent on God for our well-being.
Our Helplessness, God’s Strength
The Bible reminds us that we are sheep, referred to as such over 200 times. We cannot defend ourselves against life’s challenges, but God provides us with the strength we need. We cannot cleanse ourselves from sin, but if we confess, He forgives (1 John 1:9). We often fail to recognize danger, but God directs our steps (Proverbs 16:9). And when we go our own way, God may need to intervene, breaking our “leg” to save us from ourselves, just as He works everything together for our good (Romans 8:28).
A Personal Reflection
I have experienced my fair share of “broken legs” in life – struggles in family, relationships, and finances. Yet, each time, God has proven to be the Good Shepherd, guiding me through the darkest of times. I am grateful for His constant care, love, forgiveness, and the relationship we share.
A Prayer of Gratitude
Thank you, Lord, for watching over your sheep. Help me become the person you want me to be. Amen.
