Gratitude in Abundance
As I reflect on my life, I’m reminded of Psalm 16:2, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” These words, spoken by King David, resonate deeply within me.
A Humbling Reality Check
It only takes one trip to a developing country, where poverty and suffering are rampant, to recognize the blessings I often take for granted. Closer to home, I see fatherless families, hungry children, and teenagers trapped in cycles of addiction and crime. These stark contrasts serve as a poignant reminder of my own good fortune.
Counting My Blessings
While I may not be considered wealthy by many standards, my list of good things is extensive. I have a warm home, access to nutritious food, education, and the freedom to worship without fear of persecution. But where does God feature on my list of good things?
A King’s Declaration
When David penned those words, he was likely facing difficult circumstances as king. Yet, his declaration was not one of despair, but of triumph. He proclaimed that, regardless of life’s circumstances, God was his ultimate good. In Psalm 16, David writes, “Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure… I will praise the Lord… I keep my eyes always on the Lord… My heart is glad and my tongue rejoices…”
A Personal Declaration
As I reflect on my own life, I realize that my good things list can fluctuate depending on my circumstances. But one thing remains constant: apart from God, I have no good thing. In times of abundance or scarcity, I choose to declare that God is my ultimate good, my Rock, my Salvation.
