The Unwavering Comfort of a Loving Father
As a parent, there’s nothing more natural than comforting our children when they’re hurt, scared, or struggling. We drop everything to make them feel better, to ease their pain, and to reassure them of our love. It’s an instinctual response, born out of our deep desire to protect and care for them.
The Privilege of Comfort
These moments of comfort are some of the most precious in our day. They’re a privilege, really – a chance to show our children that we’re there for them, no matter what. And yet, as we extend this comfort to our kids, we often forget that we, too, need comfort. We forget that we have a Heavenly Father who longs to do the same for us.
Why Do We Resist?
Why do we hesitate to let God comfort us? Why do we think He’s too busy, too distant, or too uninterested in our problems? Maybe it’s because we compare our struggles to those of others, thinking ours aren’t significant enough to warrant His attention. Or perhaps we believe He’s tired of hearing our repetitive requests for help. Whatever the reason, we need to remember that our Father is not like us. He’s not limited by human constraints or emotional fatigue.
Learning from Our Own Parenting
As I reflect on my own parenting, I’m struck by the parallels between how I comfort my child and how God comforts me. Just as I would never turn my child away, God is always ready to receive me, to hold me, and to help me. He’s not put off by my repeated mistakes or my fears. Instead, He’s patient, kind, and gentle, always willing to reassure me of His love.
A Father’s Unwavering Presence
When I’m criticized, injured, or afraid, I know that my Father is there, waiting to comfort me. He won’t abandon me or grow tired of my struggles. He’ll hold me until I’m better, help me until I can live with the hurt, and stay awake with me when I’m afraid of the dark. And that’s all I need – His presence, His comfort, and His unwavering love.
