The Heart of Hope: A Person, Not a Principle
The Christmas narrative is a testament to the transformative power of hope. In the manger, surrounded by angels, Mary, shepherds, and wise men, lay the embodiment of hope – Jesus. This hope wasn’t just a feeling or an idea; it was a person who would change the course of human history.
A World in Despair
In a world ravaged by sin, people were lost and helpless. Education, government, and laws couldn’t penetrate the root of the problem. Humanity needed a Savior, and the only suitable one was God himself. The One who had been rejected, rebelled against, and replaced in people’s hearts with idols would come to rescue and redeem.
The Only Solution
Jesus didn’t come to establish an earthly kingdom or enforce his rule. He came to serve, suffer, and die, so his kingdom could reign in the hearts of people. He came to seek, save, and forgive. Through his incarnation, sinners could be redeemed, and the world could be renewed.
The Way, the Truth, and the Life
Before going to the cross, Jesus explained his identity and mission to his followers. He declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). In these words, Jesus revealed himself as humanity’s only hope.
The Way to God
Sin had created a chasm between God and humanity. Jesus bridged this gap by meeting God’s moral requirement and paying the ultimate penalty for our sin. He became the only way to restore relationship with God.
The Truth Revealed
Jesus revealed the Father to us, demonstrating God’s redemptive plan. He preached the truth about our condition, showing us our need for a Savior. Hanging on the cross, he demonstrated how God planned to deal with our sin.
The Life-Giver
Jesus didn’t just preach life; he is life. He came to conquer death and ignite eternal life in the hearts of his redeemed children. Hope in the present and future rests on his almighty shoulders.
A Call to Adore
This Christmas, let’s open our hearts and minds anew to the wonder of God coming to earth. Let’s focus on the person of Jesus, who offers us restored relationship with God, knowledge of what is true, and life that will never end. That’s the heart of hope.
