Compassion in the Face of Opposition
As we navigate life’s challenges, we often encounter people who vehemently oppose our beliefs and values. It’s easy to get defensive and argumentative, but what if we could respond with compassion and understanding instead?
A Lesson in Discernment
I recall a powerful encounter between my husband, Bill, and a young man who boldly declared, “I don’t believe in God or the Bible!” But Bill, sensing the pain beneath the surface, chose not to engage in a heated debate. Instead, he asked a gentle question: “Are you letting what you read when you were 12 influence your lifelong decision?”
A Story of Agnosticism and Redemption
Bill shared his own story of struggling with agnosticism, and how God had transformed his life. He spoke of the love of Christ, and the young man was deeply moved. As he departed, he signed our guestbook with a poignant phrase: “A night of decision.”
Responding with Grace and Discernment
When faced with opposition, it’s essential to ask God for grace and discernment. We must learn to see others through His eyes, rather than our own. By doing so, we can respond with compassion and empathy, rather than anger and defensiveness.
May We Be Generous with Our Compassion
As we interact with those who oppose us, may we be generous with our compassion. May we seek to understand their struggles and pain, rather than simply trying to win an argument. And may we always remember that love and kindness can be the most powerful tools in breaking down barriers and touching hearts.
