Encountering the Real God: Beyond Human Bias

The Majesty of God: A Reality Check

When we pause to reflect on the awe-inspiring God who created us, does it evoke a sense of wonder and reverence? Or do we often settle for a limited understanding of God, one that is confined to our own biases and preconceptions?

The Dangers of a Tame God

Nicky Gumbel shares a thought-provoking anecdote about a child drawing a picture of God. The child’s response to her mother’s skepticism is telling: “They will know what God looks like by the time I’ve finished!” Isn’t this what we often do? We try to define God based on our own limited understanding, attempting to remake God in our own image. However, this approach leads to a “god” that is mere reflection of ourselves – lifeless, powerless, and utterly unlike the God of the Bible.

The Contrast Between Our Insignificance and God’s Majesty

As R. C. Sproul so eloquently puts it, “People are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God.” Are we truly encountering God, or are we merely admiring our own reflections? Have we been seeking to understand God’s true nature, or have we become complacent in our assumptions?

A Call to Encounter the Real God

The Psalmist’s declaration, “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9), serves as a powerful reminder of God’s grandeur. As we seek to encounter God, let us ask Him to reveal a glimpse of His greatness to us today. Let us be willing to set aside our preconceptions and behold the majesty of God in all its glory.

Reflection and Action

Take a moment to reflect on your understanding of God. Are you encountering the real God, or have you been admiring yourself in the mirror? Seek to know God as He truly is, and ask Him to reveal more of Himself to you today.
