Embracing Harmony: A Commandment of Love
As we navigate the complexities of life, we’re reminded that unity and harmony are not mere coincidences. They require intention, submission, and a deep commitment to living in sync with one another. The Bible reminds us that these qualities are not only desirable but also commanded by God Himself.
The Three Pillars of Harmony
In 1 Peter 3:8, we’re instructed to “live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.” But what does this look like in practice? According to Peter, there are three essential commitments we must make to cultivate harmony:
- Empathy in Action: We must actively share concern with those who grieve, standing alongside them in their times of need.
- Unconditional Love: We must share love just as a healthy family would, without condition or expectation of reciprocation.
- Compassion Over Arrogance: We must show compassion rather than arrogance when dealing with others’ failures towards us, recognizing that we all stumble and fall short.
A Prayer for Harmony
Father, I confess that I’ve often let my own sensitivities get the better of me, reacting with pettiness when others haven’t treated me as I felt I deserved. Yet, I know that Jesus, the Creator, was treated shamefully by those He created. Help me, Father, to discern when to lovingly confront those who wound me and when to ignore the barb and minister to them instead. May I be an instrument of Your peace, harmony, and unity. Through Jesus, I pray. Amen.
