Finding Joy in the Everyday
As I stood at my kitchen window, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate beauty of a spider web suspended outside. The raindrops caught in its delicate threads sparkled like diamonds in the morning sunlight. My daughter chuckled at my enthusiasm, saying, “Mom, you find pleasure in the smallest things.” And she’s right. I do.
A World of Noise and Distractions
In today’s fast-paced, consumer-driven society, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of noise, speed, and constant stimulation. We can easily lose sight of the small, yet profound, blessings that surround us every day. As the apostle Paul wrote, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11-12). But how do we cultivate this sense of contentment in a world that often values bigger, faster, and more?
The Thieves of Wonder
For me, there are two major obstacles to experiencing wonder: comparison and entitlement. When I compare myself to others who seem more successful or accomplished, I can quickly become dissatisfied with my own life. And when I feel entitled to more – more recognition, more success, more comfort – I can become bitter and resentful. But Paul, who had given up so much for the sake of the gospel, didn’t fall into these traps. Instead, he learned to be content in all circumstances.
The Secret to Contentment
So, what was Paul’s secret? I believe it was his ability to see the miracles in the everyday moments, the small blessings that God scatters throughout our lives. Like the spider web outside my kitchen window, these blessings are easy to overlook, but they hold the power to bring us joy and wonder.
Cultivating Wonder
Today, I challenge you to take a moment to reflect on the small blessings in your life. Write down ten things that bring you pleasure and gratitude. Share them with a friend or family member. As you do, remember that God is always at work, scattering blessings into your life, even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty.
A Prayer for Wonder
Dear Father, thank you for the surprising ways you come to us. Today, I want to be alert to the small blessings you’ve planted along my pathway. Help me to cultivate a sense of wonder at all that you are doing for me and through me. Amen.
