Embracing the Present Moment
In the midst of our busy lives, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. We often find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle, leaving little time for reflection and connection with something greater than ourselves. As the prophet Isaiah reminds us, “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6-9).
The Struggle to Prioritize
Let’s be honest – making time for spiritual pursuits can be a challenge. Sometimes, we simply can’t be bothered, or we’re overwhelmed by the demands of daily life. I’ve coined this phenomenon “displacement theory,” where we prioritize secondary tasks over the essential ones. It’s a subtle form of procrastination, distracting us from what truly nourishes our souls.
A Personal Reflection
Recently, I’ve had to confront my own displacement theory. Due to changes in my work schedule, I’ve been unable to attend our mid-week communion service at the university campus where I work. It was only when temporary staffing arrangements allowed me to attend that I realized how much I had taken this opportunity for granted. Being in the presence of God and fellow believers was a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing my spiritual life.
A Call to Appreciation
As I reflect on this experience, I’m struck by the question: What have I taken for granted today that may not be so obvious a given tomorrow? Our health, breath, faith, and sanity are all precious gifts that can be easily overlooked in the chaos of daily life.
A Prayer of Gratitude
LORD, I thank you for entering our world to spend time with us, to set us free from sin and distraction. We rejoice that no matter our circumstances, You are always with us, even when we struggle to find the time. Thank you, LORD. Amen.
Take a Moment to Reflect
As you sit in safety, reading your Bible, and taking time to pray, ask yourself: What am I taking for granted today that may not be so obvious a given tomorrow? Take a moment to appreciate the blessings in your life, and prioritize your spiritual well-being.
