Embracing the Gift of Faith
As we reflect on the Bags of Gold Parable in Matthew’s Gospel, we’re reminded of the importance of being faithful stewards of the resources entrusted to us. The master’s commendation to his two diligent servants, “Well done, you good and faithful servant,” is a testament to the value of faithfulness in the face of adversity.
The Power of Faith
Faith is not just a feeling or an attitude; it’s a gift from God that enables us to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. As Matthew 17:20 reminds us, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” This promise is both empowering and humbling, as it acknowledges our limitations while highlighting God’s boundless power.
Rethinking Faith
One insightful definition of faith suggests that it’s always received from God, never generated by us. This perspective has revolutionized the way I approach faith, forcing me to reexamine my words and actions. When I claim to have faith in a particular outcome, I’m compelled to ask: Is this faith truly given by God, or is it mere confidence in my own abilities?
God-Centered Faith
In today’s society, there’s a strong emphasis on self-reliance and confidence in one’s own abilities. While these traits are valuable, they must be grounded in a deeper faith that originates from God. As the Bible instructs us, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Mark 12:31). This commandment assumes that we already possess a fundamental love for ourselves, which is only possible through God’s grace.
A Poetic Expression of Faith
The Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore beautifully captures the essence of faith in his quote: “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings to greet the dawn while it is still dark.” This image conveys the idea that faith is not just a passive acceptance of circumstances but an active, God-given capacity to perceive hope and joy even in the darkest of times.
A Prayer for Faith
As we strive to embody faithfulness in our daily lives, let us pray for the gift of faith and the will to remain steadfast in the face of opposition. May we recognize that our reactions to adversity, rather than the circumstances themselves, are what truly define us. May God grant us the inner peace and joy that enables us to hear His gentle whisper, “Well done, you good and faithful servant.” Amen.
