The Dangers of Pride and Self-Righteousness
Meet Rachel, a woman who wore her faith like a badge of honor. She was a regular at church, leading the women’s group and making sure everyone knew about her good deeds. But beneath her pious exterior, Rachel harbored a secret: pride.
A Humbling Experience
One morning, as Rachel read her Bible, a passage jumped out at her. It told the story of two men: one who boasted about his good works to impress God, and a humble tax collector who begged for mercy. Jesus’ words pierced Rachel’s heart: “The tax collector, not the other, went home justified before God.” Rachel was taken aback, forced to confront her own self-righteousness.
A Lesson in Humility
Rachel realized that she had been trying to earn God’s favor through her actions, rather than acknowledging her own shortcomings. She learned that true humility is not about what we do, but about recognizing our need for God’s mercy. As Jesus said, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).
A Call to Humility
Friend, let Rachel’s story be a warning to us all. We can’t earn God’s love or favor through our good deeds. Instead, we must come to Him with humble hearts, acknowledging our mistakes and asking for His mercy. It’s only then that we can experience true freedom and forgiveness.
