The Power of Small Beginnings
“God rejoices to see the work begin” (Zechariah 4:10, NLT). Sometimes, it’s the smallest acts that can have the greatest impact.
A Heroic Act of Defiance
During World War II, pilot Bohn Fawkes experienced a miraculous escape when his plane was hit by Nazi antiaircraft guns. Despite the damage, the plane didn’t explode, and Fawkes landed safely. Upon inspecting the damage, the crew chief discovered eleven unexploded shells in the gas tanks. One of them contained a note from a courageous assembly-line worker who had disarmed the bombs, saving the plane and its crew. This small act of bravery had far-reaching consequences.
God’s Formula for Success
God often uses the smallest, seemingly insignificant deeds to achieve greatness. A pebble from a brook brought down the giant Goliath. A widow’s coins inspired generations to come. And a cross-suspended carpenter changed the course of history. It’s not about the size of the deed, but about the power of God behind it.
The Ripple Effect of Small Deeds
In the hands of God, small seeds can grow into sheltering trees, and tiny leaven can expand into nourishing loaves. Small deeds can change the world. Moses had a staff, David had a sling, Samson had a jawbone, and Rahab had a string. Mary had some ointment, Aaron had a rod, and Dorcas had a needle. All were used by God to achieve great things.
What Do You Have to Offer?
God inhabits the tiny seed and empowers the tiny deed. He cures the common life by giving no common life, by offering no common gifts. Don’t discount the smallness of your deeds. Sow the mustard seed, bury the leaven lump, make the call, write the check, or organize the committee. What do you have that God can use to change the world?
