The Uninvited Guest: Uncovering the Idol of Food
As someone who lives to eat, I’ve always had a complicated relationship with food. I love thinking about it, cooking it, and planning special occasions around it. But beneath the surface, I’ve struggled with an insatiable hunger that can never be fully satisfied. The more I eat, the more I crave, and the cycle continues.
A Life-Long Struggle
I’ve tried every trick in the book to control my eating habits – from fad diets to prayer and begging God to “heal” me. But each attempt has fallen short, leaving me feeling defeated and frustrated. I’ve lost weight only to gain it back, and more. It wasn’t until I started a Bible study on overeating that I realized I was missing the root of the issue.
The Idol of Food
I’ve come to acknowledge that I have a substitute god in my life – food. I’ve allowed it to fill the void meant for God, and it’s left me feeling empty and dissatisfied. Substitute gods, like food, take our time, energy, thoughts, money, focus, and purpose, only to leave us wanting more.
The Freedom of Repentance
Through my study of God’s Word, I’ve come to understand that my struggle with food is not just a physical issue, but a spiritual one. I need God’s sorrow for my sin and His repentance. Joel 2:12-13 reminds us to “turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” Repentance is hard, but it’s the key to breaking free from the cycle of sin and shame.
A Call to Reflection
Do you have a substitute god in your life? Are you bowing down to the god of pride, pleasure, or self-righteousness? Is there an area in your life that you’ve been unwilling to relinquish and submit to God? I urge you to ask yourself these questions and consider the freedom that comes with surrendering to God.
Trading In the Substitute
Romans 2:4 reminds us of God’s kindness, tolerance, and patience. He is waiting to release us from the bonds of sin and set us free. So, trade in that substitute god for the real One – it’ll be the best decision you’ve ever made!
